Introduce yourself in a few words

Hello, I’m Alex Mejia. Im an Aircraft Maintenance Technician with 5 and a half years of experience in multiple aircraft from piston to turbine jets. I’ve been working in aviation since I was 18 . Some hobbies of mine are riding motorcycles and traveling .

What does your work involve?

My work involves providing maintenance for Part 141, 135 and 91 operations . As a Maintenance Tech I make sure I adhere to the Federal Regulations to provide a level of maintenance care to Sofars fleet that will ensure safe travel and operation for passengers and crew.

Can you tell us about your background?

I come from a Hispanic household. Proud son of Mexican immigrants who came to this country and made a future for themselves. I fell in love with aviation from traveling constantly to Mexico to visit my family . I’ve been working on my PPL and am a certified Airframe and powerplant technician . I’m the first in my family to go to and graduate from college.

What diploma or training do you need?

I went to Vaughn College of Aeronautics and  graduated with an Associate’s degree as well as completed the Airframe and Powerplant Technican course. This allowed me to take the exam in order to get my certificate.

What do you like about working at Sofar?

The people I work with are great. Very respectful and professional individuals. I’ve been working for SoFar for over a year now and it’s been a great experience.

What's a day in maintenance like?

A day in maintenance involves us getting our paperwork and tools ready in front of the aircraft. Preparing our station with some good upbeat music and tackling the task at hand . Whether it’s a routine inspection or a discrepancy that needs to be fixed it’s always a fun environment while staying focused on completing the task at hand.

Give us some examples of aircraft repairs.

We’re constantly doing 300 Fh , 300Fh/12 month inspections, 600 hour inspections on the pilatus fleet. We take care of monthly inspections for the phenoms and pilatus as well. We’ve had to replace starters, on the pilatus , brakes , tires as well. These are just a few examples of maintenance that needs to be done that’s not a routine inspection item.

What's your dream destination?

My dream destination is Tokyo Japan ! I’ve wanted to go for years . Still saving up for it lol.

Tell us an anecdote

A little story about my college experience . I went to Dowling College for Aviation Management . Senior year the school went bankrupt and I was forced to make a career decision during the summer break due to all the colleges only accepting only 2 years of credits. I chose Vaughn and took a gamble on Aviation Maintenance, never having touched a wrench in my life. Glad to say years later it was the best decision I ever made. I’m happy to be a part of the SoFar team and proud of the confidence the company has in me to provide Maintenance to your fleet.
